About the role

This is a rare opportunity to build and lead a civil practice area within a respected and growing firm. You will manage cases involving unlawful arrest, police misconduct, misuse of police powers, assault, battery, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, and other civil claims—especially those that intersect with criminal proceedings.

Your work will span multiple jurisdictions, including the ACT, NSW, and WA. You will collaborate closely with our criminal defence team to identify and pursue civil claims.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent plaintiffs in civil claims involving intentional torts.
  • Independently manage a caseload, supported by operational resources.
  • Work with criminal defence lawyers to identify and develop civil claims aligned with ongoing criminal matters.
  • Create and implement internal systems, templates, and workflows to support the civil practice.
  • Play an active role in growing the civil practice and contributing to broader litigation strategy.

About you

The successful applicant MUST have a minimum of 3+ years post-admission experience. Candidates who do not meet this requirement will not be considered and need not apply.

You must be committed to providing individuals with expert legal representation and place value on providing support, understanding and unbiased compassion to our clients. It goes without saying that you will have a strong work ethic, a proactive approach to all tasks and be capable of engaging with a hardworking but fun close-knit team.

You will also bring:

  • A genuine passion for helping clients that have been wronged.
  • Experience and sound knowledge of case law, practice and procedure in intentional tort, negligence, and personal injury claims.
  • Experience appearing as a solicitor advocate and instructing Counsel.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and advisory skills in complex matters.
  • A willingness to mentor and support other lawyers in the practice.
  • Drive and determination to build a client base and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the firm’s civil practice.

You may be based in Canberra or Sydney, working from your preferred office.

  • The ability to analyse and provide advice in respect of complicated matters.
  • Willingness to mentor and assist other lawyers and staff members in the practice.
  • Dedication and determination to build your own client base.
