You must also have the following attributes:

  • A genuine passion for criminal law.
  • Experience appearing as solicitor advocate in summary proceedings including pleas, defended hearings and bail applications.
  • Experience instructing Counsel in complicated matters including trials and appeals.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to analyse and provide advice in respect of complicated matters.
  • Willingness to mentor and assist other lawyers and staff members in the practice.
  • Dedication and determination to build your own client base.

We are seeking a motivated Civil Litigation Lawyer, ideally with 1+ year PAE, to provide core support to our Senior Associate in the firm’s growing civil practice.  This role is perfect for someone looking to deepen their experience in intentional torts, police accountability matters, negligence claims and civil litigation that intersects with criminal proceedings.

About the Role

Working closely with our Senior Associate, you will assist in delivering high-quality representation in cases involving unlawful arrest, police misconduct, misuse of police powers, assault, battery, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution and other civil claims, especially those that intersect with criminal proceedings.

Your practice will span multiple jurisdictions including NSW, the ACT and WA. You will also collaborate with our criminal defence team to identify and advance civil claims arising from their matters.

Day to day you will:

  • Assist in managing intentional tort and civil claims from intake through to resolution.
  • Prepare high-quality written material including statements of claims, pleadings, submissions and briefs.
  • Appear at directions hearings, mediations and settlement conferences.
  • Brief counsel for defended hearings and trials.
  • Conduct legal research and provide advice to the Senior Associate and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with our criminal defence team to identify and support civil claims that arise from ongoing criminal matters.
  • Maintain organised file management and contribute to internal systems and processes.

About you

We are looking for a driven and capable junior lawyer who is keen to build their skills and confidence in civil litigation, particularly intentional tort claims and police accountability matters.

You will bring:

  • 1+ year PAE, with exposure to civil litigation or intentional tort claims.
  • Experience attending directions hearings, mediations and settlement conferences.
  • Experience briefing counsel in defended hearings/trials.
  • An interest in police accountability and plaintiff-side advocacy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive approach, sound judgement and a willingness to learn.
  • The ability to work well within a small, supportive and tight-knit team.
  • This role is based in Sydney.
