About this centre

The Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) is the only adult correctional centre in the Australian Capital Territory. It is a minimum to maximum-security facility that accommodates detainees of all genders, located in Hume on the southern edge of Canberra.

The AMC opened in 2008 and was designed around human rights principles, with an open campus-style layout of accommodation units around a central facilities area. It is operated by ACT Corrective Services, a business unit within the Justice and Community Safety Directorate, and is governed by the Corrections Management Act 2007.

What this centre is used for

The AMC holds both sentenced detainees and people on remand awaiting the outcome of their matters. It accepts people charged under ACT and Commonwealth law, and includes specialist areas such as a remand unit, women’s accommodation, a transitional release centre, a crisis support unit, and the Hume Health Centre operated with ACT Health.

Visits and contact

Family and friends can visit detainees from Wednesday to Sunday once they are on the detainee’s approved visitor list. Bookings must be made at least 3 business days in advance by calling the general enquiries line and selecting option 1. Visits can be in person or by video. First-time visitors must register. Before attending, confirm the booking and check the detainee’s accommodation area, as visits are scheduled by area.
