About this court
The ACT Court of Appeal is the highest court within the ACT court system and forms part of the ACT Supreme Court. It exercises full general appellate jurisdiction, hearing appeals in both criminal and civil matters.
The Court of Appeal is usually constituted by three judges. It is administered through the ACT Supreme Court registry and sits in the ACT Law Courts Building at Knowles Place in Canberra City.
Matters heard in this Court
This court generally deals with a range of matters, including:
- Appeals against conviction in criminal matters
- Appeals against sentence
- Appeals from civil judgments of single judges of the ACT Supreme Court
- Applications for leave to appeal, where leave is required
A further appeal from the ACT Court of Appeal lies to the High Court of Australia, but only with special leave.
