About this court
The ACT Supreme Court is the superior court of the Australian Capital Territory. It hears the most serious criminal matters, significant civil disputes, and appeals from the ACT Magistrates Court and certain tribunals.
The court sits in the ACT Law Courts Building at Knowles Place in Canberra City, in the same precinct as the ACT Magistrates Court.
Matters heard in this Court
This court generally deals with a range of matters, including:
- Serious indictable criminal matters, including trials before a judge or a judge and jury
- Sentencing for serious offences
- Bail applications in indictable matters
- Major civil disputes
- Appeals from the ACT Magistrates Court and some tribunal decisions
Appeals from single judges of the Supreme Court are heard by the ACT Court of Appeal.
