About this facility

Banksia Hill Detention Centre is the State’s youth detention centre for young people aged 10 to 17, located at Canning Vale in Perth. It holds sentenced and unsentenced boys and girls from across Western Australia and is managed by the Department of Justice. The centre opened in 1997, replacing the former Longmore Detention Centre.

What this facility is used for

Banksia Hill holds young people who are on remand or sentenced to detention by the Childrens Court or higher courts. Under the Young Offenders Act 1994, detention is intended as a last resort. Young people have access to education, programs, health services, and support including Aboriginal welfare officers and youth justice officers.

Visits and contact

Visits are arranged by phone. The centre allows visits outside normal hours for parents and guardians from regional and remote areas by arrangement. Young people can make phone calls to approved numbers, with parents or guardians giving permission for calls to others. Additional calls to lawyers and youth justice officers are allowed. For serious concerns about a young person’s safety or wellbeing, families can call the centre to request a welfare check.
