About this court

The High Court of Australia is the highest court in the country. It interprets the Constitution, decides matters of national legal significance, and hears appeals from the State and Territory Supreme Courts, including the ACT Court of Appeal, as well as the Federal Court.

The High Court sits in its building at Parkes Place, Parkes, in Canberra. It usually sits in Canberra for about two weeks each month, except in January and July. The Principal Registry is in Canberra, with registry offices in each State capital.

Matters heard in this Court

This court generally deals with a range of matters, including:

  • Appeals from the ACT Court of Appeal and other State and Territory Supreme Courts, by special leave
  • Constitutional matters and the interpretation of Commonwealth laws
  • Cases of national legal significance
  • Certain matters within the Court’s original jurisdiction under the Constitution

There is no automatic right of appeal to the High Court. A party must first apply for and be granted special leave to appeal.
